Butterfly Feeders
So, you planted your flower garden, meticulously choosing a variety of bright colors. You dreamed of all of the butterflies that would soon come as you proudly watched your green sprouts start to make flower buds. The flowers bloomed, but to your extreme disappointment, there were no more visitors to your flowers than there were to your floral printed sun dress. What went wrong? To your surprise, butterflies are very particular. Many kinds of butterflies have their own particular favorite flowers. Don’t worry though; you can still attract butterflies to your yard. Butterfly feeders are a great supplement to an incomplete butterfly garden.
Butterfly Feeder Kits
You can buy entire butterfly feeder kits at many local stores as well as online. You probably will only need to add water to a nectar solution, fill the bottle and be done. The butterflies will come to eat at your butterfly feeders and may even rest at your flower garden. The great thing about a store bought butterfly feeder is that it is already ready to go when you pull it out of the box. It is decorated with alluring color and has been equipped with an attractive food source. Butterfly feeders are not complicated things, but they are very easy to purchase. If you are more interested in doing it yourself and recovering some of your lost pride over the flower garden, you can also make your own butterfly feeders.
Building Butterfly Feeders
You can build butterfly feeders using materials that you already have in your house. Sponges hold liquid beautifully in a form that butterflies can approach. When building a butterfly feeder, consider color and access. Butterfly feeder plans should allow for an easy way for butterflies to feed. Luckily they are very adept at walking upside down and getting their tongues into small and deep places. Butterfly feeders that you make may start in a bottle, a dish or even with a piece of fruit. The butterfly food should be sweet and syrupy. You can make your own ‘nectar’ by dissolving sugar in water. You can also get a quick treat for your butterfly feeders by cutting up some ripe fruit.
If your first designs for butterfly feeders don’t work, try again. You will come up with the right combination very quickly. Depending on the kind of butterflies that live in your area, you may need to work with specific colors or fruits. If you live near a citrus grove, offer oranges in your butterfly feeders. If you have a strawberry patch, put the overripe berries in your butterfly feeders.
